Urban Regeneration [book review]
by: Sigit Kusumawijaya

This writing is more or less analysed based on Urban Regeneration book by Peter Roberts and Hugh Sykes. The book itself is quite clear and comprehensive to explain about how urban regeneration works in several places in the world, the theory, managing, monitoring and evaluating urban regeneration. The book also review and reexaminating the history and context of urban regeneration, look deeply at education, economy, politic, social and environmental aspects and also consider at implications of funding.

The book is organized orderly from the introduction part that explain about the context, history, evolution, definition, purpose and also strategy and partnership in dealing with urban regeneration. Next part explains more focus on several topics, for instance economy, physical and environmental, social and community, employment, education and training, and housing. Then, how to manage urban regeneration is explained in the next part, for example the monitoring and evaluating the result, and organisation and management of urban regeneration. The last chapter is about the study case examples of how urban regeneration is implemented in United States and Europe.

Relate with the infrastucture regeneration issue in Jakarta, this book is quite helpfull for the author to analyze. Since the beginning of the book part, author could easily relate the special infrastructure regeneration issue in Jakarta with the book by understanding of all the explanation. The most problem to understand this book is about the difficulty of language used in this book. Some statements are quite difficult to be understood. However, with all the comprehensive explanation, this book is required reading for students of urban studies and practitioners involved in regeneration.
